Siree Raag, Third Mehl:
Whom shall I serve? What shall I chant? I will go and ask the Guru.
I will accept the Will of the True Guru, and eradicate selfishness from within.
By this work and service, the Naam shall come to dwell within my mind.
Through the Naam, peace is obtained; I am adorned and embellished by the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||
O my mind, remain awake and aware night and day, and think of the Lord.
Protect your crops, or else the birds shall descend on your farm. ||1|| Pause ||
The desires of the mind are fulfilled, when one is filled to overflowing with the Shabad.
One who fears, loves, and is devoted to the Dear Lord day and night, sees Him always close at hand.
Doubt runs far away from the bodies of those, whose minds remain forever attuned to the True Word of the Shabad.
The Immaculate Lord and Master is found. He is True; He is the Ocean of Excellence. ||2||
Those who remain awake and aware are saved, while those who sleep are plundered.
They do not recognize the True Word of the Shabad, and like a dream, their lives fade away.
Like guests in a deserted house, they leave just exactly as they have come.The life of the self-willed manmukh passes uselessly. What face will he show when he passes beyond? ||3||
God Himself is everything; those who are in their ego cannot even speak of this.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is realized, and the pain of egotism is eradicated from within.
I fall at the feet of those who serve their True Guru.
O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to those who are found to be true in the True Court. ||4||21||54||
Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)
जब मैं अपने गुरु से जाकर पूछता हूँ कि किस की सेवा करूँ और कौन-सा जाप करूँ
तो आदेश मिलता है कि - अपने अंतर्मन से अहंत्व का त्याग करके सतिगुरु का आदेश मान लेना।
सतिगुरु का आदेश मानना ही वास्तविक सेवा एवं चाकरी है, इसके द्वारा ही मन में प्रभु का नाम बसता है।
ईश्वर के नाम सिमरन द्वारा ही सुखों की प्राप्ति होती है तथा सत्य नाम से ही जीव शोभायमान होता है॥ १॥
हे मेरे मन ! तुम दिन-रात प्रभु के चिन्तन में जागृत रहो।
अपने प्रेमा-भक्ति मूलक जीवन को सम्भालो, वरन् आयु रूपी खेती को मृत्यु रूपी कूज खा जाएगी।॥ १॥ रहाउ ॥
जिन्होंने ब्रह्म को परिपूर्ण माना है, उनकी सम्पूर्ण मनोकामनाएँ पूर्ण हुई हैं।
जो व्यक्ति परमात्मा का भय मानकर दिन-रात प्रेमा-भक्ति करते हैं, वे सदैव परमात्मा को प्रत्यक्ष देखते हैं।
उनका मन परमात्मा की गुणस्तुति में स्थिर अनुरक्त रहता है, इसी से शरीर में से भ्रम दूर होता है।
यही जीव शुभ-गुण स्वरूप पवित्र खज़ाने वाले परमात्मा को प्राप्त करते हैं।॥ २॥
जो जीव मोह-माया से सुचेत रहते हैं, वे विकारों की मृत्यु से बच जाते हैं और जो अज्ञानता की निद्रा में सो जाते हैं, वे शुभ-गुण स्वरूप सम्पति को लुटा गए।
वे प्रभु की गुणस्तुति का सार नहीं पहचान पाते और उनका जीवन स्वप्न भाँति व्यतीत हो जाता है।
ऐसे जीव खाली घर के अतिथि की भाँति भूखे आते हैं और भूखे ही चले जाते हैं।स्वेच्छाचारी जीव का जन्म व्यर्थ चला जाता है, ऐसे में वह आगे परलोक में जाकर क्या मुंह दिखाएगा ? ॥ ३॥
वह परमात्मा ही सर्वस्व है, यह बात अहंकारी जीव द्वारा नहीं कही जा सकती।
गुरु का उपदेश पहचान कर ही कष्टदायक अहंकार को ह्रदय में से निकाला जा सकता है।
अपना कर्तव्य जान कर जो सतिगुरु की सेवा करता है, मैं उनके चरण स्पर्श करता हूँ।
नानक देव जी कथन करते हैं केि सत्यस्वरूप परमात्मा के द्वार पर वे जीव ही सत्य धारण करते हैं और मैं उन पर बलिहारी जाता हूँ॥ ४॥ २१ll ५४ ॥
