Burn emotional attachment, and grind it into ink. Transform your intelligence into the purest of paper.Make the love of the Lord your pen, and let your consciousness be the scribe. Then, seek the Guru's Instructions, and record these deliberations.Write the Praises of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; write over and over again that He has no end or limitation. ||1||
O Baba, write such an account,That when it is asked for, it will bring the Mark of Truth. ||1|| Pause ||
There, where greatness, eternal peace and everlasting joy are bestowed,The faces of those whose minds are attuned to the True Name are anointed with the Mark of Grace.If one receives God's Grace, then such honors are received, and not by mere words. ||2||
Some come, and some arise and depart. They give themselves lofty names.Some are born beggars, and some hold vast courts.Going to the world hereafter, everyone shall realize that without the Name, it is all useless. ||3||
I am terrified by the Fear of You, God. Bothered and bewildered, my body is wasting away.Those who are known as sultans and emperors shall be reduced to dust in the end.O Nanak, arising and departing, all false attachments are cut away. ||4||6||
Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)
! माया का) मोह जला के (उसको) घिसा के स्याही बना के (अपनी) अक्ल को सुंदर कागज़ बना। प्रेम को कलम, और अपने मन को लिखारी बना। गुरु की शिक्षा ले के (परमात्मा के गुणों की) विचार करनी लिख। प्रभु का नाम लिख, प्रभु की महिमा लिख, यह लिख कि प्रभु के गुणों का अंत नहीं पाया जा सकता, इस पार उसपार का आखिरी छोर नहीं ढूँढा जा सकता।1।
ऐसा लेखा लिखने की विधि सीख। जिस जगह (जिंदगी में किये कामों का) हिसाब मांगा जाता है, वहाँ ये लेखा सच्ची राहदारी बनता है।1। रहाउ।
जो मनुष्यों के मन में (प्रभु का) सदा स्थिर नाम बसता है (लेखा मांगे जाने वाली जगह) उनके माथे पे टीके लगते है, उन्हें आदर मिलता है। उन्हें हमेशा के लिए खुशियां और आत्म हुलारे मिलते हैं। पर प्रभु का नाम प्रभु की मेहर से मिलता है, फजूल की हवाई बातों से नहीं।2।
(संसार में) बेअंत जीव आते हैं (और जीवन सफर खत्म करके यहाँ से) कूच कर जाते हैं, (कईयों के) सरदार (आदि बड़े बड़े नाम) रखे जाते हैं, कई (जगत में) भिखारी ही पैदा हुए, कईयों के बड़े बड़े दरबार लगते है। (पर दरबारों वाले सरदार हों या कंगाल हों) जीवन सफर खत्म करने पर समझ आता है कि प्रमात्मा के नाम स्मरण के बिना (ये सभ) जीवन व्यर्थ (गवां जाते हैं)।3।
हे नानक! (कह, हे प्रभु!) तुमसे दूर दूर रहने पर संसार का तौखला और सताता है। (इस तौखले में) खिझ खिझ के शरीर भी जर्जर होता जाता है। (तेरी याद के बग़ैर धन-सम्पदा का भी क्या गर्व?) जिनके नाम खान सुल्तान हैं सभी यहाँ मिट्टी में मिल जाते हैं (जगत से जाने के वक्त सारे झूठे मोह प्यार खत्म हो जाते हैं)।4।6।
