If I had a palace made of pearls, inlaid with jewels,Scented with musk, saffron and sandalwood, a sheer delight to behold-seeing this, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||1||
Without the Lord, my soul is scorched and burnt.I consulted my Guru, and now I see that there is no other place at all. ||1|| Pause ||
If the floor of this palace was a mosaic of diamonds and rubies, and if my bed was encased with rubies,And if heavenly beauties, their faces adorned with emeralds, tried to entice me with sensual gestures of love-seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||2||
If I were to become a Siddha, and work miracles, summon wealth And become invisible and visible at will, so that people would hold me in awe-seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||3||
If I were to become an emperor and raise a huge army, and sit on a throne,Issuing commands and collecting taxes-O Nanak, all of this could pass away like a puff of wind.Seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||4||1||
Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)
अगर (मेरे लिए) मोतियों के महल बन जाएं, यदि (वह महल-माड़ियां) रत्नों से जड़ी हों, (उन महल-माड़ियों को) कस्तूरी केसर व चंदन आदि से लिपाई करके (मेरे अंदर) चाव चढ़े, (तो भी यह सब कुछ व्यर्थ है, मुझे खतरा है कि महल माड़ियों) को देख के मैं कहीं (हे प्रभु!) तुझे भुला ना बैठूँ, कहीं तू मुझे विसर ना जाए, कहीं तेरा नाम मेरे चिक्त में टिके ही ना।1।
मैंने अपने गुरु को पूछ के देख लिया है (मैंने अपने गुरु को पूछा है और मुझे यकीन भी आ गया है) कि प्रभु से बिछुड़ के ये जिंद जल-बल जाती है (तथा प्रभु की याद के बिना) और कोई जगह भी नहीं है (जहाँ वह जलन खतम हो सके)।1। रहाउ।
यदि (मेरे रहने के वास्ते) धरती हीरे लालों से जड़ी जाए, अगर (मेरे सोने वाले) पलंघ पर लाल जड़े हों, यदि (मेरे सामने) वह सुंदर स्त्री हाव-भाव करे जिसके माथे पे मणी शोभायमान हो, (तो भी यह सब कुछ व्यर्थ है, मुझे खतरा है कि ऐसे सुंदर स्थान पे ऐसी सुंदरी को) देख के मैं कहीं (हे प्रभु!) तुझे भुला ना बैठूँ, कहीं तू मुझे बिसर ना जाए, कहीं तेरा नाम मेरे चिक्त में टिके ही ना।2।
अगर मैं माहिर जोगी बन जाऊँ, अगर मैं योग-समाधियों की कामयाबियां हासिल कर लूँ, अगर मैं योग से प्राप्त हो सकने वाली बरकतों को आवाज मारूँ और वे (मेरे पास) आ जाएं, अगर (योग की ताकत से) मैं कभी छुप सकूँ कभी प्रत्यक्ष हो के बैठ जाऊँ, यदि (सारा) जगत मेरा आदर करे, (तो भी ये सब कुछ व्यर्थ है मुझे खतरा है कि इन रिद्धियों-सिद्धियों को देख के) मैं कहीं (हे प्रभु!) तुझे भुला ना बैठूँ, कहीं तू मुझे बिसर ना जाए, कहीं तेरा नाम मेरे चिक्त में टिके ही ना।3।
अगर मैं फौजें इकट्ठी करके बादशाह बन जाऊँ, यदि मैं (तख़्त पे) बैठा (बादशाही का) हुक्म चला सकूँ, तो भी, हे नानक! (ये) सब कुछ व्यर्थ है (मुझे खतरा है कि ये राज-भाग) देख के मैं कहीं (हे प्रभु!) तुझे भुला ना बैठूँ, कहीं तू मुझे बिसर ना जाए, कहीं तेरा नाम मेरे चिक्त में टिके ही ना।4।1।
