Raag Aasaa/so dar•Guru Nanak Dev ji•Ang 9,10

 Aasaa, First Mehl:

Chanting it, I live; forgetting it, I die.It is so difficult to chant the True Name.If someone feels hunger for the True Name,That hunger shall consume his pain. ||1||

How can I forget Him, O my mother?True is the Master, True is His Name. ||1|| Pause ||

Trying to describe even an iota of the Greatness of the True Name,People have grown weary, but they have not been able to evaluate it.Even if everyone were to gather together and speak of Him,He would not become any greater or any lesser. ||2||

That Lord does not die; there is no reason to mourn.He continues to give, and His Provisions never run short.This Virtue is His alone; there is no other like Him.There never has been, and there never will be. ||3||

As Great as You Yourself are, O Lord, so Great are Your Gifts.The One who created the day also created the night.Those who forget their Lord and Master are vile and despicable.O Nanak, without the Name, they are wretched outcasts. ||4||3||

Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)

हे माता जी ! जब तक मैं परमेश्वर का नाम सिमरन करता हूँ तब तक ही मैं जीवित रहता हूँ, जब मुझे यह नाम विस्मृत हो जाता है तो मैं स्वयं को मृत समझता हूँ ; अर्थात् मैं प्रभु के नाम में ही सुख अनुभव करता हूँ, वरन् मैं दुखी होता हूँ।किंतु यह सत्य नाम कथन करना बहुत कठिन है।यदि प्रभु के सत्य नाम की (भूख) चाहत हो तो वह चाहत ही समस्त दुखों को नष्ट कर देती है॥ १॥

सो हे माता जी ! ऐसा नाम फिर मुझे विस्मृत क्यों हो।वह स्वामी सत्य है और उसका नाम भी सत्य है। ॥ १॥ रहाउ ॥

परमात्मा के सत्य नाम की तिनका मात्र महिमाः(व्यासादि मुनि) कह कर थक गए हैं, किंतु वे उसके महत्व को नहीं जान पाए हैं।यदि सृष्टि के समस्त जीव मिलकर परमेश्वर की स्तुति करने लगें तो वह स्तुति करने से न बड़ा होता है और न निन्दा करने से घटता है॥ २ ॥

वह निरंकार न तो कभी मरता है और न ही उसे कभी शोक होता है।वह संसार के जीवों को खान-पान देता रहता है जो कि उसके भण्डार में कभी भी समाप्त नहीं होता।दानेश्वर परमात्मा जैसा गुण सिर्फ उसी में ही है, अन्य किसी में नहीं।ऐसे परमेश्वर जैसा न पहले कभी हुआ है और न ही आगे कोई होगा ॥ ३॥

जितना महान् परमात्मा स्वयं है उतनी ही महान उसकी बख्शिश है।जिस ने दिन बनाकर फिर रात की रचना की है।ऐसे परमेश्वर को जो विस्मृत कर दे वह नीच है।गुरु नानक जी कहते हैं कि परमात्मा के नाम-सिमरन के बिना मनुष्य संकीर्ण जाति का होता है। ॥ ४॥ ३॥
